Nic Brown B-movie hip-hop 's most prolific space cadets unleash their latest paeon to interplanetary insanity and you'll be delighted to hear that "Pray to Science" is as addictively off the wall as its predecessors "Planet Murk" and "Outer Limits". When so much contemporary rap is necessarily grounded in politics, institutionalised racism and various other social issues, it's refreshing to hear a hip-hop album that addresses less pivotal topics such as the potential metaphysical impact on the perceived dominance of certain male tree pandas following a sofa-sized comet strike on one Saturn's outermost moons. I loved "Blank Face LP" as much as the next hip-hop fan but every now and then it's a refreshing to hear a hip-hop crew as talented as Timbuktu, Chokeules and Savillion let rip with something as lyrically surreal as "Pray to Science" but that doesn't compromise on the musical element one iota. Funny as fuck and yet of equal, if not better, production quality of any big name hip-hop record released this year, this is a gem I already fear will be criminally overlooked come the traditional year end round-ups.Getting too bogged down in either the political or production content of a record has cost many a musician his livelihood. Music is entertainment at the end of the day and if we lose sight of that, it might be time for a rethink hiatus. For Swamp Thing there's no time for anything else. Favorite track: Unicorn.

about

For the past five years Toronto's three-headed rap monster, Swamp Thing (Timbuktu, Chokeules & Savilion), have delivered a special sonic treat every Halloween. This year is no different. Back again with perhaps their greatest achievement yet, Pray To Science is a distinguished and sizeable creation, conjuring up themes of the mythical, bizarre, and ultimately, the unknown.

Produced entirely by Savilion and Timbuktu, Pray to Science was conceived and recorded at a remote Muskoka cottage, and features the cuts of DMC champ DJ iRATE. The record delivers uptempo grooves and deep pocket space-aged boom bap, born of and created for the musically creative.

Digging into the pantheon of underground hip hop, the records features collaboration from Ghettosocks, Birdpares, Ambition, Wordburglar and Nilla.
